Act now to secure upgrades for your 3G devices and avoid service disruption.

Australia’s 3G networks are being retired to enable faster rollout of 4G and 5G services.

3G was rolled out in 2003 (20 years ago!). At the time it was considered to support ground-breaking data and network speeds. 1.1 to 20Mbps download and upload speeds from 300kbps to 3Mbps.

In contrast, the more modern 4G network offers download speeds of 10Mbps up to a speed cap of 100Mbps. Upload speeds are typically between 1 to 40Mb.

The communication method 3G towers use consumes a lot more available radio spectrum per tower than the more modern 4G and 5G towers. The overuse of the available radio spectrum by the 3G towers is restricting the deployment of newer technology. Companies all over the world are currently sunsetting the 3G network including Australia and New Zealand.

In summary shutting down 3G = more potential 4G and 5G coverage. This is great news for anyone using mobile internet in high density or remote areas.

Millions of Australians are still using 3G devices and many people are unaware of the impending shutdown or how it will impact them.

Because 3G and 4G/5G devices utilise different technology, 3G-only devices are unable to connect to more modern 4G and 5G towers, which means that when the 3G network is shutdown their devices will stop working and be unable to receive any signal.

Don’t delay updating your 3G equipment from Aptella.

When is the shutdown happening?

Telstra is shutting down the 3G network from 28th October 2024.

Optus is shutting down its 3G network from 28th October 2024

Vodafone has already shut down its 3G network.

Stock availability and predictions for high demand as we approach the cut-off dates mean that customers could be affected by longer wait times and risk service disruptions before they receive new hardware.  We urge everyone to act now to avoid delays.
